Introducing Heli: The Next Generation of Programmable Cable Tags with RFID technology
Heli is a revolutionary RFID tag designed to transform the way cables are identified and managed. This innovative solution offers a sustainable alternative to traditional cable labeling methods, optimized for use on small-diameter cables down to 1.2 mm diameter.
With NFC, Heli achieves a whole bunch of industry firsts at the same time in terms of compactness, ruggedization and data retention, i.e. 27 mm long and 9 mm wide at the widest point, -40 to +85 degrees Celsius operation and 60 years of data retention, featuring an ST25TV02K chip with 2 kilobits of memory (250 characters).
Users love Heli for its ease of use and reliability without worrying about technical details. Heli just works.
This is what you get when you license Heli:
Patented Technology: Heli's unique design incorporates cutting-edge features, including pitch, pinch, and interference isolation, to ensure secure and reliable cable identification, whether the cable is a small diameter optical fiber or a small gage electrical cable.
Innovative Molding: The two-shot injection molding process allows for a durable, two-tone color-coded tag that makes the cable tag not only compelling to use programatically, but also easy to match two ends of the same cable without even relying on the RFID.
Zip-Tie-Free: Heli's design eliminates the need for wasteful zip-tie tails, reducing environmental impact and simplifying the cable labeling process. The tags are re-usable and easy to lock down via a shrink tube if needed.
Royalty-Free Licensing: Heli is available under a royalty-free term licensing model, making it accessible and affordable for other RFID tag makers, cable manufacturers and large end-users alike to source the technology and handle manufacturing by themselves, with unparalleled full support in mold design and manufacturing optimization.
Central section can be downsized for NFC and upsized for RAIN RFID: With NFC, the antenna is typically a coil with 11 or so turns to resonate at this frequency. It is optimized for close-range magnetic field coupling, so the antenna can be compact. On the other hand, RAIN RFID operates at 860–960 MHz (UHF) and the antenna is a much longer designed for far-field electromagnetic radiation, enabling long-range communication. In both cases, the Heli design adapts to these requirements by sizing the central section appropriately.
Sustainable Solution for Cable Identification
Introducing Heli, the groundbreaking RFID tag optimized for sustainable cable labeling. Unlike traditional solutions that rely on wasteful zip-ties, Heli offers a revolutionary approach to cable identification that is eco-friendly and efficient.
By eliminating the need for zip-ties, Heli drastically reduces the amount of plastic waste generated during the cable management process. This innovative design not only enhances the environmental impact but also streamlines the installation and removal process, saving time and resources for professionals.
Heli is made from recyclable plastic, reusable and even behaves as a digital product passport carrier. Heli therefore stores details on the material make-up of the underlying cable ensuring that ESG disposal information tracks the asset being disposed a the end of life. Heli is even cited as a concept then called a 'CableDPP' in the Annex to the "Benchmark of existing DPP-oriented reference architectures" of CIRPASS-1 at pages 37 & 38 available here: https://cirpassproject.eu/download/2151/?tmstv=1726733384 .
Patented Pitch, Pinch, and Interference Isolation
Optimized Pitch
Heli's patented pitch design ensures secure and stable attachment to cables while manoeuvring a cable into the Heli or vice-versa. The its kind of a magic trick and you have to try it to feel it and see the installlation take less than 1 second.
Secure Pinch
The innovative pinch mechanism grips the cable firmly without causing damage, providing a reliable hold, yet ensuring some movement to pull it back away from the patch panel connector into comfortable reading position.
Interference Isolation
Heli's design isolates the RFID chip from interference, ensuring consistent and reliable data transmission. This is especially relevant for UHF RFID even more so than NFC. Its the same concept of dielectric gap in what's called 'RFID on Metal' but in a way that's relevant to cables.
We say cables, but really, we mean any cable-like structures.
Heli attaches to anything that resembles a cable like power cords, Ethernet cables, HDMI cables, even coaxial cables, speaker wires, microphone cables and wired audio headsets. You can program the RFID to store ownership information. It also can be added to hoses, pipes, and tubing for a range of industrial uses. We even have seen it attached to garden hoses, climbing ropes, catheters and stethoscopes. The possibilities are endless!
The versatile design allows for easy installation and secure attachment regardless of the type or size of the cable. The smaller the diameter, and the harder for a spiral-wrap label to be legible, the more Heli becomes pretty much the only practical way to ensure consistent identification and tracking. With its reliable data transmission and strong attachment, Heli offers a reliable solution for various industries, from telecommunications to healthcare. Whether it's in a noisy industrial environment or a delicate medical setting, Heli provides a robust and efficient method for cable management.
There is no denying that Heli was born out of a telecom need and addresses it first. Here we show in video how Heli is used to attach to 2 mm diameter SC/APC jumpers in an FTTH patch panel.

When cables are tested, where do tests results go?
Heli makes it possible to store links to test results or even a copy of the important tests results, right on the cable being tested. No more hunting for the result of that cable which was tested with this fancy optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR), or optical power meter.
With Heli, all the necessary information and test results can be easily accessed and attached to the cable itself, ensuring that important data is readily available for future reference. This not only saves time and effort but also increases efficiency and accuracy in cable management, making Heli an invaluable tool for quality control and troubleshooting purposes.
Up to date digital twins of cabling infrastructure
Heli makes it possible to use tools like Netbox and various DCIM software to keep track of the cabling infrastructure in real-time down to every cable end and patch panel port correlation with unique identifiers. It makes it possible to walk down a cable path and trace it even through junction boxes.
By integrating with these tools, Heli can serve as the foundation to maintain up-to-date digital twins of the cabling infrastructure, providing a visual representation of the network layout and the accurate location of each cable. This enables quick identification of cable paths, connections, and any potential issues, streamlining troubleshooting and maintenance processes. With Heli's integration capabilities, managing and documenting the cabling infrastructure becomes much more efficient and reliable.
Each Heli has a globally unique serial number which makes it possible to correlate the physical cables with their corresponding digital twins. By utilizing Heli's unique serial number system, network administrators can quickly locate and verify the status of any specific cable within the cabling infrastructure.
We even have built Heli with UHF RFID with LEDs that can blink and can support Geiger counter like location. They are pretty long so not quite as nice as the NFC ones, but they are very impressive and easy to use. Ever needed to locate a cable behind a wall ? Yes this is easy. Ever needed to inventory cables on a telephone pole ? That's also possible.

The push toward extremely small-diameter cables in high-density fiber optic environments, like central offices and data center meet-me rooms, is driven by the following factors.
You can expand each of the following benefits of Heli for small cable diameters:
Space Optimization
In high-density environments, space is at a premium. Traditional, thicker cables can quickly lead to congestion, making cable management challenging and limiting the physical space available for additional connections. Smaller-diameter cables help maximize available space, allowing more connections within the same footprint.
Improved Airflow and Cooling
Denser cabling can obstruct airflow, leading to higher temperatures in data centers. Smaller cables reduce this obstruction, enabling better airflow around equipment. This helps maintain efficient cooling, crucial for equipment longevity and reliable performance, especially in facilities with thousands of active connections.
Ease of Installation and Maintenance
Thinner cables are lighter and easier to route, making installations and upgrades more manageable. In densely packed frames, this flexibility is vital for maintenance and minimizing the risk of disturbing other connections.
Enhanced Bend Radius for Tight Spaces
Modern fiber optic cables with smaller diameters are often designed with improved bend tolerance, allowing tighter bends without compromising performance. This is essential in high-density setups, where cables often need to navigate confined spaces without signal degradation.
Data Rate and Connectivity Demands
With increasing demand for higher data rates and more connections in data centers and telecom infrastructure, smaller cables enable higher port density on panels and devices. This high port density supports current and future scalability requirements, catering to growing data demands in 5G networks, cloud computing, and IoT applications.
Cost Savings on Materials and Infrastructure
While smaller-diameter fiber cables are often more technologically advanced, they can reduce costs by saving on rack space, energy for cooling, and reducing the need for extensive infrastructure to support heavier, bulkier cables.
Preferred to hard to read wrap-around labels
Heli’s support for labeling small-diameter cables with more legible labeling techniques offers several practical benefits over traditional wrap-around labels, particularly in high-density cabling environments.
You can expand each of the following benefits of Heli for more details:
Improved Readability and Quick Identification
Legible labels on small-diameter cables make it easier for technicians to identify cables without excessive handling. In dense cabling environments, wrap-around labels can be difficult to read, especially when cables are stacked closely together or if the label rotates. Heli's clear, straightforward labels reduce the time technicians spend searching for and identifying specific cables, improving efficiency and reducing the potential for errors.
Reduced Strain on Cable Surface
Traditional wrap-around labels can add bulk and exert stress on small-diameter cables, potentially affecting cable flexibility and leading to performance issues, especially where bend radius is critical. Heli’s labeling methods likely avoid adding this strain, preserving cable integrity and minimizing the risk of cable damage.
Enhanced Durability and Lifespan
Heli’s labeling solution is likely more robust and suited to high-density environments where cables are frequently handled. Wrap-around labels can degrade over time, especially in high-touch areas, leading to faded or damaged labeling. In contrast, Heli’s approach may use materials or positioning that maintain legibility over the cable's lifespan, ensuring long-term identification.
Space Efficiency
In tight spaces, bulky wrap-around labels can contribute to cable congestion, especially when cables are packed densely. By using a streamlined labeling approach, Heli helps preserve the compact nature of small-diameter cables, maintaining the intended space-saving benefits and preventing overcrowding
Faster Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Efficient and legible labeling enables faster maintenance, reducing downtime and associated costs. When cables are clearly marked, technicians can quickly disconnect, reroute, or troubleshoot without disturbing adjacent cables. This is particularly valuable in environments like data centers, where minimizing disruptions is essential
Improved Aesthetic and Professional Appearance
Clear, standardized labels provide a clean, organized look that is visually more professional. In environments where clients or regulatory auditors may view cabling (like telecommunications central offices), neat, legible labeling presents a well-maintained, efficient operation.
Heli’s labeling approach aligns with the needs of high-density environments, supporting better cable management practices, reducing risks of errors, and improving the efficiency of operations and maintenance, making it an invaluable solution in modern cabling systems.
You can expand each of the following benefits of integrating Heli with wrap-around labels:
Immediate Visual Identification
Wrap-around labels provide quick visual information without the need for scanning equipment. In many cases, technicians need immediate identification of a cable, especially during urgent maintenance or troubleshooting, and visual labels make this fast and convenient.
In the same manner, the two-tone color code of Heli provides for another simpler way than a hard-to-read wrap around label to convey different meanings among all lookalikes.
Redundancy and Backup
Having both a wrap-around label and an RFID tag provides a layer of redundancy. If an RFID tag fails or if scanning equipment is temporarily unavailable, the wrap-around label ensures that the cable can still be identified and traced, which is particularly important in critical environments like data centers or network infrastructure
Compliance with Industry Standards and Regulations
In some industries, regulatory standards or internal policies mandate physical labeling on cables for verification and audit purposes. Wrap-around labels ensure compliance with these requirements by providing consistent, reliable identification
Compatibility with Different Levels of Technology
Not all technicians or facilities have access to RFID scanners, especially in remote or less-equipped locations. Wrap-around labels are accessible to any technician without special tools, ensuring that cables can be identified regardless of the availability of RFID technology.
Enhanced Data for Technicians
Wrap-around labels can contain specific information, such as cable purpose, installation date, or technician initials, which may not be immediately visible in an RFID tag scan. This information can be crucial for technicians working on complex systems, providing quick context for the cable's function and history.
Troubleshooting and Error Reduction
RFID tags can be useful for tracking and inventory management but may not be detailed enough for on-the-spot troubleshooting. Wrap-around labels allow technicians to cross-check cable identification with RFID data, reducing the chance of human error when managing multiple cables.
Visual Reinforcement in High-Density Environments
In high-density setups, having a visual wrap-around label can make it easier to trace cables by sight, especially if multiple cables are bundled closely. RFID can identify a cable but doesn’t assist in visually tracking it through a dense installation, which wrap-around labels can facilitate.
In short, wrap-around labels complement RFID technology by providing immediate visual access, redundancy, and compliance in cable identification, making both methods valuable for comprehensive and efficient cable management.
With Heli, flush cutters are not needed anymore
A flush cutter is a tool specifically designed to safely and cleanly cut zip ties without leaving sharp edges. When using a zip tie without a flush cutter, there is a risk of leaving sharp ends that can cause injury or damage to the cables. Having a flush cutter ensures that the cut ends of the zip ties are smooth and flush with the surface, making it safer to handle and preventing any potential harm.
In a cable rack full of cable tags that are based on zip ties that have not been cut with a flush cutter, forearms can easily get scratched or injured. The sharp ends of the untrimmed tags can snag on clothing or skin, causing discomfort or even potential harm.
With Heli's integrated springs, there is no zip tie and no need for cutting it, thus no need for flush cutters. This not only simplifies cable management but also reduces the risk of injuries or damage in the workspace.
